Latin banned: people mistake ‘for example’ for ‘egg’

Apparently councils are banning Latin words, even those which are considered everyday terms in the English language.

” Several local authorities have ruled that phrases like “vice versa”, “pro rata”, and even “via” should not be used, in speech or in writing. “

While I understand only a handful of people nowadays are proficient in Latin, this is to me, just another example of the eroding intelligence of the UK population in recent years. I don’t even understand Latin, but I would still use terms such as ‘e.g’ in place of ‘for example’ on occasion. This leads me to the most laughable aspect of this news:

” A Campaign spokesman said the ban might stop people confusing the Latin abbreviation e.g. with the word “egg”. “

Sometimes I contemplate where such moves will take us next. While I welcome many changes to traditions in both culture and language, councils choice to ban Latin is erratum. Libraries are already being renamed ‘Idea Stores’ and such. I suppose next people will nip down to the local ‘Food Place’ and ‘Meat Shop’ to buy their groceries, before capping off the day in the ‘Beer Pisser’ for a nice cold pint of ‘drunk juice’.
